If you needed any convincing that the peak Chicago region produce season is on, feast your eyes on the photo above. The Green City Market Lincoln Park stand of Nichols Farm & Orchard (Marengo, Illinois) had big piles of these summertime cruciferous vegetables — cauliflower in the familiar white variety and also gold and vivid purple, bok choy cabbage and broccoli in the background.

Hard to believe that the year is half over. Somebody slow down the clock. But in the meantime, we get to enjoy things like these blueberries and Rainier cherries that I photographed at the stand of Mick Klug Farm.

I was out early, arriving at Green City at 7:15, because I'm in a major work catchup phase that makes this a nose-to-the-grindstone weekend. But if you're like me and enjoy the laidback ambiance of a less crowded market, early is the best time to hit the busy destination markets such as Green City.

My haul from Green City and a quick stop by The Lincoln Park Farmers Market nearby:

A whole chicken and three different kinds of sausages (bratwurst for 4th of July, bacon bangers and Hungarian kiebasz) from Finn's Ranch and lettuce from Flatwater Farms, (both Buchanan, Michigan); strawberries and blueberries from Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, Michigan); zucchini from Nichols; and Wisconsin gruyere from Stamper Cheese (Chicago).
