Bountiful Season So Far Includes Some Super-Sized Produce

No two growing seasons are exactly alike. That may always have been true, more so now with climate change adding another layer of unpredictability.
I'm happy to say that for almost all major crops, this year's Chicago region growing season has been superb. Not only have the vegetables and fruit been delicious and plentiful, but lately they've been coming in big.
I made a quick early morning visit to the Wednesday (July 30) Green City Market ahead of a busy work schedule. There I spied two types of fruit that were new in season (at least for me) at the stand of Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, Michigan). You might be able to make a whole meal out of one of those white peaches in the lead photo.

Their Ozark Premier plums on the right are pretty ginormous, too.

My market haul included one of those mega-cantaloupes (which so far have been incredible) from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois), and they also sold me some of the biggest ears of corn I've ever seen, along with a reload of green beans and green bell peppers. The SunGold tomatoes — which my wife Barb aptly described as like eating candy — are from Mick Klug Farm.
And it's not even the weekend yet! Plan your peak season market adventures with Local Food Forum's Chicago region market tracker.
