10-Minute Survey Asks About Your Disposed Food Over the Past Week
After I published two news items on Thursday (August 6) about efforts to combat food waste, I learned that University of Illinois Extension is conducting an online survey. Thanks to Sarah Batka of Illinois Extension Cook County for the info.
Here is how Extension describes the survey, and I urge you to consider taking the 10 minutes or so to fill it out. One suggestion: I started to take it and realized that it requests information about what food you disposed of over the past week. I want to get things right, so I am going to keep careful track. But you can certainly go ahead and fill it out right away.
Help shape solutions to food waste – take the Illinois Household Food Waste Survey!
Research shows that one-third of the U.S. food supply was not purchased or eaten in 2023. Some of that surplus food is donated or recycled, but most becomes food waste that ends up in a landfill, releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Illinois households are invited to take a short survey about meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, and what happens to food at home. Your insights will help guide food waste prevention education across the state that supports cost savings, stronger communities, and a healthier environment.Â
The survey is open to adults in Illinois who are regularly involved in household food shopping, cooking, meal planning, or kitchen cleanup. Share what works well for your household and what is challenging. Take the 10-minute survey online at go.illinois.edu/FoodWasteSurvey.
