For Mission-Driven Just Roots Farm, The Beauty is a Bonus

I'd known for some time about Just Roots Chicago, a non-profit urban farming organization, and admired their mission to fight food insecurity. This prompted me last year to join their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) subscription program. This not only entitled me to enjoy big bunches of the half-acre's farm delicious (and healthy) produce, but gave me an opportunity every other Saturday to photograph the seasons of natural beauty on a produce farm.

This year I decided not to do the CSA because I need to spend more time on the area's farmers markets, but I still relish the opportunity to visit Just Roots Farm with my camera. The folks there asked me to help out this past Saturday (June 6) by taking photos of their Farm Kickoff event, which included farm tours, giveaways of seedlings and saplings, and a children's art table. But of course, while I was at it, I captured the lush, mostly green growth of their late spring crops.

I hope you enjoy them.

And every few minutes, a reminder from the adjacent Green Line El tracks that this is in fact an urban farm.
