Wednesday Wind-Down: Green City's Midweek Market Calls It a Year

A Melancholy Moment Tempered by Near-Summer Weather

I am at a point in life when I feel the need to slow down the clock. Time marches stubbornly on, and I dropped by Green City Market in Chicago's Lincoln Park today (October 28) to pay my respects at their last Wednesday market of the 2026 season.
Please note, though, that Green City's Saturday markets, at the Lincoln Park flagship campus and in the West Loop, will be open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for four more sessions ending on November 21 (just before Thanksgiving). Then, after just a one-week hiatus, Green City om December 5 will launch its annual winter market at 3031 N. Rockwell St. — next to the Rockwell on the River complex in the Avondale neighborhood.
If you live in Chicago and spend any time outside, you are aware that we have been in a long stretch of nearly cloudless skies and well-above average temperatures. While many folks are reveling in this summer-lite October, the fall colors have been very slow in coming.

While still spotty, though, the lovely trees in this section of Lincoln Park are starting to strut their stuff.

My fridge and pantry are well stocked at the moment, so this was a mostly social visit. Here's my small haul...

There are Empire apples from Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, Michigan); spinach (it's back!) and perhaps the most perfect little head of cauliflower I've ever seen, from Frillman Farms (Berrien Springs, Michigan); and eggs from pastured chickens via Finn's Ranch (Buchanan, Michigan).
I hope to make it to Green City's market this Saturday. It's Halloween, so maybe there will be some dress-up, though as usual, I'll be going as the old guy with a camera.
Local Food Forum will on Thursday publish its weekly update of the Chicago Region Farmers Market Tracker. I won't be pretty — unless your favorite color is red.
