With a Fond Goodbye (Til Next Year) to One of My Favorite Markets

As you will see by taking the much shorter stroll through Local Food Forum's Chicago Region Farmers Market Tracker, there are only a few braving the turn towards true November weather.

I have my favorite markets, and I made a point of getting out early this past Tuesday (November 3) to make a final stop this year at SOAR Farmers Market in downtown Chicago.

Located near Michigan Ave.'s Magnificent Mile, SOAR is open on Tuesdays from May through the beginning of November. It is located on the plaza of the Museum of Contemporary Art in the Streeterville neighborhood (SOAR stands for Streeterville Organization of Active Residents).

Though small, SOAR Market includes a selection of some of the region's leading market vendors, and it has the feel of a neighborhood market right in the thick of the city's downtown bustle.

My modest market haul:

Celery and bell peppers from Nichols Farm and Orchard; cranberries and apples from Ellis Family Farms (Benton Harbor, Michigan).

There are several markets still open, with some staying open until just before Thanksgiving. Please get out there while you can, buy some delicious, healthy local food, and support our local farmers.

Open Friday, November 6—Thursday, November 12

A red entry mean the market is not open this week, is in the final week of its season, or just has finished its season.
