Outdoor Market Season is Winding Down in a Blaze of Glory

Yes, October can be melancholy for us farmers market fans, as the outdoor market season winds down to a mere handful by the end of the month.

On the other hand, as you can see in the above photo, this is one of the most vividly colorful and pretty times of the year to visit your local market.

Obviously, pumpkin season has fully arrived (well enough in time for you Halloween jack-o-lantern artistes). And multiple varieties of winter squash — storage crops that will be a big part of our winter local food subsistance in the coming months — also are available in abundance.

These photos were taken during my visit Saturday (October 10) to The Lincoln Park Farmers Market, the smaller and more laidback neighborhood market that shares the Lincoln Park neighborhood on Saturdays with the Green City mega-market less than a mile away. The market extends down the walkway next to Lincoln Park High School, the building on the left.

My modest market haul: cherry tomatoes, Yukon Gold potatoes and sweet potatoes from Los Rodriguez Farm (Eau Claire, Michigan); Bartlett pears from Noffke Family Farms (Coloma, Michigan); and Montreal-style bagels from Lefty's Righteous Bagels (Evanston, Illinois). On the way out, I crossed the street to visit with my friends at Daly's Donuts and buy four of their delicious, baked apple cider doughnuts.

The Lincoln Park Farmers Market ("The" is part of its formal name) is open for the season, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturdays through November 21.
