We have finally hit a stretch of beautifully sunny, mild to cool days here in early October. The result of that at Chicago region farmers markets is a true transitional season in which some of our summer crops are still carrying on while the market tables fill with fall favorites.

Keep reading to get to my walkabouts at Chicago's Green City Market over the past few days, but first... Green City will benefit from a fun fundraising event on the evening of Thursday, October 15, which will take place at one of my favorite stores in the city: Bottles Up, a small, highly curated wine and spirits shop located at 3164 N. Broadway in the Lakeview neighborhood (a few blocks from where we live).

The store's very knowledgeable team holds numerous tasting classes, and the event on the 15th (starting at 7 p.m.) is part of their Wine 101 series. Even if you think you know a lot about wine, you'll learn some new stuff and there's a very good chance you'll taste some wines you haven't seen before.

The ticket cost is $45, and $15 of that goes directly to Green City Market. Click the button below to reserve your seat (I already have).

Now, back to food. Obviously, it being October 7, we won't be enjoying summer crops for long. But take note...

There is still some sweet corn, bell peppers and field tomatoes...

While fall fixtures such as winter squash, pumpkins, apples and Brussels sprouts are increasingly making their presence felt.

My Green City visit on October 3 produced this haul: Ludacrisp apples (love that name), zucchini and red bell peppers from Nichols Farm & Orchard (Marengo, Illinois); chicken wings from Finn's Ranch (Buchanan, Michigan); cherry and Roma tomatoes from Wholesome Harvest (Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin); and Bartlett pears and grapes from Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, Michigan).

And I paid a quick visit to their Wednesday market today (October 7): grapes from Ellis Family Farms (Benton Harbor, Michigan); pasture-raised eggs from Finn's Ranch; cherry tomatoes and sweet bell peppers from Frillman Farms (Berrien Springs, Michigan); apple cider baked donuts from Daly's Donuts (Chicago); and parsnips, cauliflower and a Delicata squash from Nichols.

Coming Thursday is the weekly update to our Chicago Region Farmers Markets Tracker, which will, unfortunately, reflect that many of our outdoor markets are winding down their seasons.
