Plus, a frittata recipe from Illinois Farmers Market Association

If you want to know what experts think will be the leading better-for-people-and-the-world grocery trends in 2026, then I hope you'll read my latest contribution to Natural Awakenings Chicago magazine.

The article is based on a December 4 webinar presented by Naturally Chicago, the trade association for the region's natural consumer packaged goods industry, for whom I work as a communications consultant.

The webinar, titled "Growth and Disruption Trends for Natural Brands and Retailers 2026," featured experts from SPINS, the leading provider of data and industry insights, and KeHE, the largest wholesale distributor of natural products in North America. Key takeaway from the panel discussion: the growth gap between natural and conventional products may be accelerating, as interest in natural products has blossomed into a lifestyle choice, especially for younger shoppers.

The January issue of Natural Awakenings Chicago also has news you can use right in your own kitchen: a frittata recipe chock full of ingredients (including eggs, of course) that can be found at many of the winter farmers markets that are already open or soon getting under way.

The recipe was contributed by Janie Maxwell, executive director of Illinois Farmers Market Association (ILFMA), who wrote, "Winter farmers markets feature products available year-round, including meat, poultry, eggs, dairy and cheese, bread and baked goods, sweets, and preserved or packaged foods. Thanks to season-extension practices by farms, a limited variety of fresh produce may also be available."

Click the first button to access the recipe, and the second to get Local Food Forum's Chicago region Winter Farmers Market Tracker, which is extrapolated from ILFMA's statewide market chart.
