Just a Couple of Visits Left, So Not Throwing Away My Shots

The Chicago weather on September 27 can be just about anything. But the mid-summer-like heat this past Saturday was a bit of an unexpected twist. With the inevitable slide toward winter slow to settle in, the Just Roots farm on Chicago's South Side still was a robust growing space during my CSA produce pickup.
I have just two more bi-weekly visits (October 11 and 25) before my subscription concludes. But since this article is part of a series, started in May, to highlight the changes of our region's growing season, I have plenty of photos to recall on the cold days to come.
Speaking of photos, first up is my CSA haul, then some beautiful food and flowers.'

The haul (from left): lettuce, scallions, green beans; SunGold cherry, field and Roma tomatoes; red pears (courtesy of Mick Klug Farm of St. Joseph, Michigan); red sweet peppers; summer squash; eggplant; and basil.
