Check Out Bob Zeni's Amazing Variety of Tomato Starters
Chicago-area gardeners, rejoice! Chicago Tomato Man, aka Bob Zeni, has opened his e-commerce site for his astounding variety of tomato plant starters. When you place an order, you'll choose from among a range of locations around Chicago metro to pick up your starter plants from late April through early June.
This is also good news for tomato lovers who don't grow their own. If you want to become a true tomato-ficionado, you will enjoy browsing the 187 (!) types of tomatoes — in all kinds of shapes, sizes, colors and sometimes fanciful names — that Chicago Tomato Man has listed to sell for the 2025 season.
Now don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great growers from whom you can source your tomato starters. But Chicago Tomato Man's assortment is over the top.
Bob Zeni is also a very nice guy, but when push comes to shove, it's all about the tomatoes, am I right?
And some more fruitful news: Chicago Tomato Man is presenting Tomatopalooza on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place at The Roof Crop, 1516 W. Carroll Ave. in Chicago's West Town neighborhood.
According to the organizers, here's what to expect at this fun event:
Join us for four hours of all things tomato! Heirloom tomato drinks, heirloom tomato food, and demos of tips and techniques to get your heirloom tomato plants growing great!
Saturday April 26 from 10:00-2:00 at The Roof Crop
• Cocktails created with heirloom tomatoes specifically for Tomatopalooza by Maxwells Trading
• Tarts created with heirloom tomatoes specifically for Tomatopalooza by Mindy's Bakery
• Demos of transplanting and plant care by the Chicago Tomato Man himself
• Tours of The Roof Crop greenhouse and gardens on The Roof Crop's rooftop
• Pickup plants pre-ordered on the Chicago Tomato Man online store.
• Buy plants on-site from the Chicago Tomato Man.
• Purchase caps, mugs and aprons on-site from the Chicago Tomato Man. Show your tomato love!

My good friend Bob sent out an email announcing that his 2025 selection is up on his website (there's a button below) for preview. Previous customers will get first crack at these beauties starting February 21. The e-commerce site officially opens to the public in March.
