Chicago's SOAR Farmers Market Still Popping as Season's End Nears

Plus, All Treats and No Tricks in My Three Sisters Garden Delivery

I've written before about how the SOAR Farmers Market in downtown Chicago is one of my favorites. Located on the plaza in front of Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art and a long block from the city's historic Water Tower, the market gives off a Streeterville neighborhood vibe — SOAR stands for Streeterville Organization of Active Residents — in the heart of one of the city's busiest sectors.

Because of my crazy schedule juggling Local Food Forum with my contract work for the Naturally Chicago non-profit, I haven't gotten to the Tuesday SOAR Market nearly as often as I'd like this year. But I happened to have a very early morning event across downtown yesterday (October 13), and SOAR was very much on my way home.

I didn't need a lot of stuff, so my market haul was fairly light: zucchini from Ellis Family Farms (Benton Harbor, Michigan), sweet potatoes, baby red bell peppers and onions from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois); fresh apple cider from Lyons Fruit Farm (Fennville, Michigan); and chicken wings from Finn's Ranch (Buchanan, Michigan).

I supplemented this with a home delivery from Three Sisters Garden (Kankakee, Illinois): a pie pumpkin (which I defiantly plan to use in a soup); five pounds of Tracey Vowell's fantastic popcorn; and a crowd favorite Autumn Frost winter squash.
Just a reminder that week by week through this month, our outdoor market herd is thinning. We'll have our weekly Tracker update posted tomorrow. (SOAR's season runs until Tuesday, November 3.)
