Local Food Forum appreciates the efforts of our region's co-op grocery stores to bring healthy food, local if possible, and community engagement to their customers. That's why we're always happy to share special events at Wild Onion Market, located at 7007 N. Clark St. in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood.

Wild Onion invites all to help them celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the store's June 2024 opening this Saturday (June 13) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Here is a comprehensive description of the event provided by the store.

The newer of Chicago’s two grocery co-ops, Wild Onion Market is celebrating its second anniversary with free events and offerings all during June and a special all-day celebration on Saturday, June 13.

The celebration on the 13th will feature a special discount offer for all shoppers. The store’s main goal is to feed the local economy and offer local good of all sorts and produce from local sources. On 6/13 all shoppers can get 10% off any local products or produce that the store carries.

The celebration will also feature music from For the Birds, , local vendors and samples, and a special owners’ giveaway. The celebration will go from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Under a canopy in front of the store, Chefs Byron & Gabi Glapion of 4 Suns Kitchen will feature samples of New Orleans Famous Po' Boys: Fried Catfish & BBQ Jerk Tofu and delicious, fresh watermelon Juice. Chefs Byron & Gabi operate 4 Suns from Tuesday - Sunday out of the co-op’s deli area. They provide a wide range of soups, wraps and bowls, as well as smoothies and juices.

People of all ages can take part in a family tortilla workshop held in Spanish and English from 3:30 – 4:30 on the 13th. The workshop will be conducted by Chef Ernesto Rodriguez, owner of El Molcajete Sauces and a vendor at the co-op.

About the Taller Familiar de Tortillas, Chef Ernesto explains, “This interactive workshop is designed for children and adults to cook, learn, and enjoy time together. Families will learn how corn is transformed into fresh masa and then into warm, handmade tortillas. Participants will practice mixing, pressing, and cooking tortillas on a traditional griddle while learning about the cultural history of corn and tortillas in Latin American cooking.”

All shoppers can get 10% off all the co-op’s local products and produce. Those items are all marked “LOCAL” with a green label and include a range of fresh produce, cheeses, Publican breads, snack foods, meats, and beer and hard liquor.

Like the older Dill Pickle Food Co-op at 2746 N. Milwaukee Ave., Wild Onion Market is an independent, community-owned grocery store open to the general public. Owners operate the business, but a person need not be an owner to shop.

The co-op focuses on promoting the local economy and providing healthy foods while promoting an environmentally friendly food chain. Many of its offerings are organic and provided by local vendors and farmers. The store also offers some specialty foods like non-homogenized milk.

Located at 7007 N Clark, Wild Onion Market serves the area around Rogers Park and Evanston.

The co-op is owned by 2,616 community members and new owners are always welcome. Owners will be getting the special 10% discount off local products all week from June 6 – 14. They also received a special $5 off coupon that they can use any time during June.

There are also regular owner perks that include getting 5% off on one shopping trip of their choice each month and a 10% discount on full case owners.

An Owners Table at the celebration on June 13 will include information about how people can become an owner. New owners all get a Wild Onion Market grocery tote bag and a car magnet. Current owners can come to the table to get one of new store car magnets.

Wild Onion Market is located at 7007 N Clark St in Chicago, the northeast corner of Clark and Lunt. It is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Parking is available in the lot in front of the store. More information about the grocery co-op and June celebration events is available at www.wildonionmarket.com.
