Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois) has been a pillar of the local food and Chicago farmers market communities for more than 45 years, growing to become the largest diversified produce farm in the region. They also are the producer of the broadest variety of apples, including many hard-to-find artisanal varieties.

So one virtual certainty for this time of year — the slow transition between the summer and autumn growing seasons — is that every time you go to a market served by Nichols, you will find crates of several new varieties that just hit the market (as you can suss from the above photo).

The big apple news from my Wednesday (September 3) visit to Green City Market in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood is that some of the most popular apple types — such as HoneyCrisp and Zestar — have made their 2025 debuts.

The weather was cloudy with taste-of-fall temperatures... apparently a preview of the sweater weather that awaits Green City Market's epic Chef BBQ fundraiser Thursday evening.

And while I'm not a sweets junkie, there is no way I could resist taking home a couple of these baked Raspberry Streusel treats from my friends at Daly's Donuts.

My modest mid-week market haul, from left: those Daly's Donuts; white button mushrooms from River Valley Ranch (Burlington, Wisconsin); Bubblegum plums and quite enormous nectarines from Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, Michigan); onions from Smits Farms (Chicago Heights, Illinois); and an eggplant and Cherry Cox apples from Nichols.

If you're going to the Chef BBQ, I hope to cross paths with you there.
