Wisconsin Organics Seeks to Clear Up Label Certification Confusion

September 14 Free Webinar Highlights Six Leading Certification Claims

In recent years, there has been a sharp rise in number of people seeking grocery items that are heathier to eat and more sustainably produced.

Over the past quarter century, many of these people have looked for the USDA Organic label as they walk down supermarket aisles. But as demand has grown for better-for-people-and-the-planet food, so have the number of label certifications proliferated — which have left a number of consumers confused.

To clarify these matters, the Wisconsin Organics organization is presenting a free webinar on Monday, September 14, at 3 p.m. central time, titled "Market Claims: Understanding Food and Farm Labels.

According to Wisconsin Organics:

"This webinar will convene leaders from major certification and verification programs to explain what widely used labels mean, how they are earned, and how they can support transparent communication with customers and supply-chain partners. The session will cover the standards, verification approaches, and market considerations behind the following claims:

• USDA Certified Organic® — The federally regulated organic label for products produced and handled according to USDA National Organic Program standards, including requirements related to approved inputs, recordkeeping, traceability, and prohibited practices.

  
  

• Regenerative Organic Certified™ — A certification that builds on organic certification and evaluates additional practices and outcomes related to soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness.

  
  

• Real Organic Project — An add-on certification and farmer-led label for certified organic farms intended to distinguish soil-based crop production and livestock raised on pasture, while addressing concerns about certain industrial-scale organic production practices.

  
  

• Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World and Certified Regenerative by AGW — address high-welfare animal husbandry and regenerative land-management practices, with verification focused on how animals are raised and how farms steward soil, pasture, and ecosystems. 

  
  

• American Grassfed® — A claim and certification focused on animals raised on a 100% grass- and forage-based diet, generally with pasture-based production requirements and restrictions on grain feeding.

  
  

• Non-GMO Project Verified — A third-party verification for products that meet the Non-GMO Project Standard, including requirements designed to manage and reduce the risk of genetically modified modified organisms
