Leading Chef Advocate Help Launch the Market in 1999

Sarah Stegner, one of the Chicago region's leading chefs, will be conducting a demo at Green City Market's winter market this Saturday (January 17). But the watch-and-learn cooking lesson and delicious samples are not the only reason for you to attend the demo, which takes place at 10:30 a.m. at 3507 N. Rockwell St. in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood.
Sarah has been a powerful advocate for a better, healthier and more sustainable food system since the 1990s, when she was a fast-rising star on Chicago's culinary scene. She allied with the late Abby Mandel, who launched Green City Market in 1999, and has been a member of the non-profit's Board of Directors since its founding. Her pursuits led her in 2022 to co-found Chicago Chefs Cook, which has held numerous events to raise money for humanitarian and charitable causes.
Local Food Forum has written often about Sarah's work, and I have attended a number of charitable events that she has helped organize.
I plan to be there on Saturday and I hope you will too. The demo is free to attend, and make sure to bring your tote so you can take home some of that delicious, nutritious locally produced food.
The event follows on the big news Green City Market made on January 9, when it officially announced its purchase of a building on Chicago's North Side as the market's first permanent home and eventually a year-round indoor vendor and event space.
Click the first button to read Local Food Forum's overview of the project, and the second to read excerpts of an interview with Letisha (Tish) Steele, who has made a major impact on Chicago's local food scene in just seven months since she assumed to role of Green City's executive director.
