Reminder: Farmers Rising Climate Change Series Starts Thursday

Now More Than Ever, We Need to Elevate This Critical Issue

A reminder that Farmers Rising — the farmer education non-profit based in Caledonia, Illinois — is launching "New Realities: Farming in the Climate Change Era," with Segment 1 of the six-part program tomorrow. The hybrid event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. central, both live in Caledonia and online, and it is open to anyone with concerns about this critical issue.

Extreme weather, rising temperatures, and new pests and pathogens are increasingly impacting livestock, crops, the soil and more. Climate change is here and its impacts are a new reality we can’t afford to ignore, especially in farming.

Now more than ever, we need to act as a movement, from farmers to eaters and from advocates to policymakers, to elevate the threat that climate change presents to the sustainability of our food supply and farmers' livelihoods.

The topics covered include:

  • Tomorrow (November 7): Introduction of Climate Change - a hands-on approach

  • November 21: Weather, Water, and Wind

  • December 5: Increasing Soil Resiliency

  • January 9: Identifying and Preparing for Emerging Disease and Pest Pressures - Specialty Crops - Speaker Kacie J. Athey

  • January 23: Identifying and Preparing for Emerging Disease and Pest Pressures - Livestock - Speaker Teresa Steckler

  • February 6: Supportive Government Resources and Financing for Climate Resilient Practices

The course will culminate on February 7 in a public showing of the regenerative agriculture documentary Common Ground, where local farmers will speak about how climate change affects their farms.

Interested participants can enroll in individual classes or register for all six at one time. If you register for all six you will receive a free ticket to the Common Ground movie screening.
