I have the pleasure of sharing Local Food Forum's wisdom with readers of Natural Awakenings Chicago in a monthly column. Here are the topics in their September 2025 issue:

  • The summer-autumn transitional season for Chicago region crops that is already under way. This produces some interesting combinations at farmers markets, such as the sweet corn neighboring pumpkins in the above photo.

  • A Mexican mole-making class and dinner on September 16 at Liberty Prairie non-profit in Grayslake, featuring Ernesto Rodriguez of El Molcajete Sauces (Evanston).

  • The Farm to Fork Feast annual fundraiser for Illinois Stewardship Alliance, the state's leading policy advocate for the local food and farm communities, which takes place in Naperville on September 27.

  • A heads-up for early November galas by two of Chicago's leading food education non-profits: The Evolved Network (November 3) and Pilot Light (November 7).
