With Flora and Fauna Farm Photos to Entice You to Go

The Liberty Prairie non-profit is throwing a Fall Farm Festival Fundraiser on October 4 (a week from Saturday). This family-friendly event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the organization's Liberty Prairie Farm, 550 Harris Rd. in Grayslake, located in Lake County near Illinois' northeast corner.
There's no registration for the event... just show up.
Having enjoyed their Spring Farm Festival in May, I can heartily recommend that you go. Here's why:
The virtue part: Liberty Prairie pursues a better food system through food education — including a strong working relationship with students at Grayslake's high school — and preservation of farmland. Proceeds — there is a suggested $10 donation — will support experience-based learning on the farm.
The fun part: There will be wagon rides around the farm, pumpkin picking, a raffle, visits to the farm animals (sheep, goats, chickens), farm harvest products and student-produced goodies.
Plus, just as there was in the spring, there will be a sheep shearing demonstration, which is truly amazing to watch. (Don't worry, their wool will grow back before winter.)
Finally, if you don't spend much time on a farm, you can immerse yourself in the natural beauty and color of the crops being grown there. Though the farm is located in an outer Chicago suburb, the event is truly an escape to the countryside.
To drive home that point, the following are photos I took on September 16 during a visit to the farm for a Mexican dinner and cooking lesson by my friend Ernesto Rodriguez of Evanston-based El Molcajete Sauces (there's a story coming about that soon).
