Chicago's Anupy Singla is no stranger to TV cameras. She was an on-air reporter before she embarked on her career centered on the cuisine of her native India, writing cookbooks, holding classes and selling food products under her brand of Indian as Apple Pie.
Her broadcasting side is now taking a big leap forward with her brand-new PBS cooking series, also titled Indian as Apple Pie. It premieres on WTTW Chicago today (Saturday, May 2) at 4 p.m. central. The show is also being carried by PBS stations elsewhere distributed nationally by American Public Television (check your local listings).
Anupy is a longtime friend who I first met on one of her tours of "Little India," centered on Devon Ave. in the far north side of Chicago. In March, Local Food Forum published her official announcement of the series.
As we reported, the Indian as Apple Pie Series blends tradition, practicality and cultural storytelling, food styles originating far around the world into everyday American kitchens with approachable techniques, time-saving strategies, and deeply personal recipes rooted in family and heritage.
Across eight 30-minute episodes, host Anupy explores the techniques and traditions that make Indian cooking approachable for home chefs at every skill level — from building layered flavor with essential spices to mastering the foundations of curries, iconic street foods, dals, biryani, and more.
She also takes viewers outside her kitchen to the aisles of international grocers and into the kitchens of iconic Indian restaurants, offering an intimate look at the ingredients, techniques, and traditions behind the cuisine.
Add in Anupy's delightful personality, and her series is sure to be a pleasure to watch.
