Kankakee Farmer Tracey Vowell Adding on Beautiful New Crops as May Looms

Here's another one of my high signs that the Chicago region growing season is accelerating: My home deliveries from Three Sisters Garden in Kankakee, Illinois, have graduated from paper bags to boxes.

Three Sisters Garden is the domain of farmer Tracey Vowell, one of my favorite humans. Tracey converted to farming about two decades ago after previous serving as executive chef at Chicago's Frontera restaurants — a gig in which she played a major role in implementing Chef Rick Bayless' local sourcing efforts at a time before farm-to-table was a big thing.

Tracey for many years was a well-loved vendor at Green City Market, with her signature sweet corn a favorite of many customers. But when the COVID shutdowns delayed market openings in 2020, Tracey — who had built a loyal customer base — pivoted to deliveries to designated Chicago zip codes. And it went so well she stopped doing farmers markets and went all in on twice-a-week deliveries.

Here is the perfect produce that was in today's box (from upper left): green garlic, pea shoots, first of season green onions, peppermint and spinach.

Tracey also sends out her next Three Sisters Garden newsletter each Wednesday morning and there are beautiful new items ready for Saturday's deliveries: Swiss chard, young Siberian kale, big salad mix, arugula, young romaine lettuce, and lamb's quarters (a plant often dismissed as a weed that is actually delicious and nutritious).
