Flagship Chicago Farmers Market Gets a Bit Spiffier in Avondale Neighborhood

Green City Market opened its winter farmers market on Saturday (December 6). They are still on North Rockwell St. in the Avondale neighborhood, but a block up from the building where they wintered over the past three years.

Green City Winter is now located at 3057 N. Rockwell in the Rockwell on the River complex, which also is home to a Soul and Smoke BBQ outlet, Judson & Moore distillery, Metropolis Coffee Co.... and Green City's own business offices.
If you decide to visit, be aware that the market — held Saturdays through March 21 (except on December 27 and January 3) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. — be aware that it is inside the complex, and you'll have to cross a courtyard to get there.

But once you're headed in the right direction, you can't miss the big Green City Market decal in the window of the market site.

Even with the re-lo, Green City Market regulars will still feel right at home. The floor space (in the main and smaller side rooms) is packed with many of the most popular outdoor market vendors at Green City's three outdoor season markets.
The Green City winter market is a bit off the beaten path, but definitely worth the trip for your local food fix.

My market haul: Cremini mushrooms from River Valley Ranch (Burlington, Wisconsin); brussels sprouts from Wholesome Harvest (Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin); winter spinach, Empire apples, heirloom tomatoes (described as last of the season), onions and Yukon Gold potatoes from Nichols Farm & Orchard (Marengo, Illinois); eggs and bulk Italian sausage from Finn's Ranch (Buchanan, Michigan); and smoked ham slices from Jake's Country Meats (Cassopolis, Michigan).
