McHenry County College — located in Crystal Lake, an outer suburb of Chicago — offers outstanding farmer training through its Center for Agrarian Learning. There next one-off class, titled "Season Extension Up Close" and focused on high and low tunnel indoor growing structures, will be held at the college on Sunday, October 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

From the organizers:

What if we could add a month or two onto each end of the growing season? Or, what if, with the right plant varieties and appropriate covering, we could grow and harvest year-round…without added heat?

Enter the high and low tunnel. In this workshop, you'll learn about various high and low tunnels in a classroom presentation. Then, we’ll head out to the MCC Student Farm to see two distinct high tunnels in operation - one with electricity and one without. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of each and see a low tunnel as well.

If you are considering season extension with tunnels, you’ll benefit from this deep dive into their construction and use.

The class will start at Room D160 in the D Building near the campus greenhouses. Click the button below to register.
