Was the Beautiful First Sunrise of 2026 a Good Omen?

We Can Only Hope...

This is the 15th January for Barb and me since we moved to Chicago in June 2011. In most years, there has been a robust fireworks display over Navy Pier that I've been able to photograph from our apartment window and share.
So we were positioned at midnight, only to be disappointed. This year's pyrotechnics were low to the ground (which we saw on TV) and at the far western end of the Pier, which is blocked by a tall building a few blocks south of our apartment. So, no fireworks photos.
Nature, however, generously provided a gorgeous first sunrise of 2026, which I share in this post. While we all know that January 1 is no more than the day after December 31, it can be pleasant for the moment to think of New Year's Day as a clean break with hopes for a better year (and oh boy, can we all use a better year).
So I'm going to take nature's gift as a omen of better things to come. Unless proven otherwise.
I hope you've had a lovely holiday season. Local Food Forum will be getting back down to business over the weekend.

The photos above show the exhaust from the factories in northwest Indiana. They are roughly 30 miles away. There's a lot to be said about flat places.

I took this final photo, of the late night Chicago skyline, while waiting for the fireworks view that never materialized. Not a bad takeaway.
