Three Sisters Garden Corn is Done, But Their Summer Season's Still On

Thank You for Another Golden Year

We're surely all familiar with the saying, "All good things must come to an end." If only that were also true about bad things.

This existential expression was prompted by the fact that one of my favorite good things — farmer Tracey Vowell's signature sweet corn crop at her Three Sisters Garden farm in Kankakee, Illinois — is now done for the 2026 season.

Wednesday's Three Sisters delivery brought me a dozen ears of their corn finale. That makes me a bit melancholy (or is it meloncholy?) not only because Tracey is one of my favorite people and her corn is so consistently excellent, but also because it is a clear signal that peak season is almost over and we are entering the transitional season when summer and fall crops are next to each other at market farmstands.

• The region's overall corn season is not over and in fact likely has at least a couple more weeks to go. Three Sisters Garden's location is about 60 miles south of Chicago, which means their crop seasons often begin and end earlier than on farms farther north.

Meanwhile, enjoy your Labor Day weekend and buy local food for your meals and celebrations. I don't know about you, but corn on the cob is sure on our menu.
