My schedule was over the top busy this past week, which resulted in shockingly few farmers market visits for the middle of June. Fortunately, I've had a bit of a overstock in the fridge that I've been working my way through.

I did make it to Green City Market in Lincoln Park Saturday morning. Most of the news isn't what's new (though there is some news), but rather what early crops are still in vogue. There was still plenty of asparagus and lots of strawberries, but if those are among your faves, don't dally. The old saying that all good things must come to an end is certainly true about seasonal crops.

So what's new? Those first cherries of the season, at the stand of Mick Klug Farm (St. Joseph, Michigan). These are Jubileum cherries, described on the site of Cummins Nursery (Ithaca, New York) as "a dramatic black-red Morello cherry (a tart cherry with red skin and red juice)... Once picked it can be eaten fresh or used in pies, preserves, wine, or jam."

And... "Jubileum is also reported to be very high in anthocyanin, a compound that is thought to have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and cancer fighting properties." Heck, if I'd known that, I would have bought a quart. Hope they still have them when I make more market rounds this week.

I did have a pretty healthy market haul nonetheless. There are potatoes, hothouse heirloom tomatoes, English peas and celery (look at those amazing leaves!) from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois); strawberry from Mick Klug Farm; and purple asparagus from Ellis Family Farms (Benton Harbor, Michigan).

All this is intended to set up this week's Local Food Forum Market Tracker below. This marks a turning point for this feature: The wave of Chicago region market openings has crested, and this is the first week since April that the schedule has no new markets opening the following week to preview.

I think with roughly 100 markets open in the Chicago area alone, we'll make out just fine the rest of the way.

Please check the schedule, plan your market visits, and support our local farmers.
