Daley Plaza Farmers Market, a Longtime Local Food Pillar, Opens Thursday

With seven additions to the Local Food Forum Chicago region farmers market tracker, and nine in the look ahead to next week, it's kind of the calm before the storm. The first full week of June alone will see the season openers of 25 markets in Chicago metro.

This week does bring the opening of Daley Plaza Farmers Market, one of the pillars of Chicago's local food community. One of the region's small handful of farmers markets when it opened in 1978, Daley Plaza — located in the heart of The Loop — is the longtime flagship of the public Chicago City Markets.

The Daley Plaza Farmers Market has all the good food variety and virtues that other farmers markets have... and one thing none of the others do: an internationally renowned work of art. The giant abstract metal sculpture in the photo above was created by Pablo Picasso and was unveiled with great fanfare in August 1967. As a result, the Daley Plaza Farmers Market provides a unique mashup of arts culture and agriculture.
