The Season of Legendary Fruit is Upon Us
Buying ginormous watermelons from my friend Tracey Vowell at Three Sisters Garden in Kankakee, Illinois is one of my favorite things every growing season. Three Sisters is one of a handful of local farms that does home delivery, a good thing since a melon this size would be a load to haul around a farmers market.
My puckish sense of humor persuaded me a couple of years ago to re-enact an Arthurian legend, but instead of the Sword in the Stone, it became The Sword (actually my chef's knife) in the Watermelon. This could have been a bit in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, if they'd thought of it.
So welcome to one of my summer rituals. Once the requisite photo was taken, I halved the melon (look at that gorgeous color). I then halved the halves, and carved out the fruit.
This watermelon, which clocked in at 18.4 pounds, wasn't the biggest that Tracey has ever sent, but it's a lot. Even Hobbes was a little bit in awe.
Barb and I will make a big dent in it, we may share some with friends in the building, and I can guarantee there is watermelon and feta salad in our future. Maybe a couple of watermelon daiquiris.
I'll get back to you on that.
