Wednesday Tasting Event Previews Museum's July 27 Copitas de Sol Fundraiser

Just about every non-profit boasts about the food and beverages that will be served at its fundraising events. The National Museum of Mexican Art, located at 1852 W. 19th St. on Chicago's South Side, is going above and beyond this Wednesday evening (July 2) by holding a free tasting of the featured tequilas and mezcals — curated by Chicago agave spirits expert Lou Bank — in an after-hours event to promote its July 27 Copitas de Sol: A Spirited Mixer.
Registration is required, and attendees must be 21 or older to participate in the spirits tasting (click the button below).
As described by the Museum:
Enjoy the Museum after hours with extended access to the galleries and gift shop until 8:00 p.m. Stroll through current exhibitions, pick up a unique gift, and take in the art in a more relaxed setting.
This month, guests 21+ are invited to our Courtyard for a sneak peek of Copitas de Sol, the Museum’s summer celebration of agave spirits. Sample mini agave pours, sip on a mini cocktail, and enjoy a relaxed evening at the Museum.
After the preview, take part in a free tour of Into the Hourglass: Paño Arte from the Rudy Padilla Collection. A docent will guide visitors through the gallery, exploring artworks created by currently and formerly incarcerated artists from Mexican and Chicano communities throughout the Southwestern United States.
Come for the preview, stay for the tour!
The event's title translates to Copitas of the Sun. A copita is a small, usually ceramic cup used for tasting (and savoring) mezcals and tequilas.
Not that into agave spirits but want in on the fun? There will be craft beer, wine, and delicious bites from great Chicago restaurants.
The big event, to be held at the Museum on the afternoon of Sunday, July 27, will be divided into two sessions.
The first, titled Agave Tails, will go from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and will feature conversations with brand ambassadors, restaurateurs and bartenders, followed by a guided tour of the exhibition Nuestras Historias: Stories of Mexican Identity from the Permanent Collection.
The second, called Agave Vibes, will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. As described by the organizers, "This upbeat session is for those who want to enjoy the event in a livelier atmosphere. All the great brand ambassadors and restaurants will be ready to welcome you, with the addition of DJ Señor Eddy of Sonorama and dancing."

And stay tuned to Local Food Forum: I had the pleasure this past week of visiting the Museum to interview Lou Bank and Thelma Uranga, the museum's communications and development manager, to get the details of the event. The article about our chat will run early in the coming week.
