Farm Festival Includes Baaaad-Ass Demo That's a Shear Delight

Our friends at the Liberty Prairie non-profit are holding their annual Spring Plant Sale and Farm Festival this coming Saturday (May 9) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place in the north Chicago suburb of Grayslake at Liberty Prairie Farm, 550 Harris Road.

Barb and I had a good time at the event last year. And I want to point out one particular highlight: the sheep shearing demonstration.

We had never before seen sheep being shorn. What was truly amazing was watching the professional shearer remove the full coats of winter wool in one piece!

And in case you're worried about the animals' welfare, they not only are unharmed, but shearing off that heavy coat is essential to their health. We learned at last year's event that if that heavy wool is allowed to keep growing, eventually the sheep won't be able to stand up.

A before-and-after comparison;

Take a drive into the nearby countryside. I'll be the old guy darting around with a camera. And on your way home, stock up for the week at the nearby Liberty Prairie Farm store (970 Harris Rd.), which curates products from the onsite farm and other local producers.
