South Side Non-Profit Promotes Circular Economies to Reduce Waste

Plant Chicago, an ecology-focused non-profit in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood, invites you to their April market to get seeds and starts for your garden or farm this year.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4432 S. Ashland and is titled Mercado de Intercambio: Cuidando a Madre Tierra (Exchange Market: Caring for Mother Earth).

They will have an assortment of flowers, herbs, veggies and a few strawberry plants, and they'll have a small selection of open pollinated seeds for sale. There will also be 15+ other vendors selling coffee, locally grown veggies, honey, prepared food, locally made handicrafts, and more.

Plant Chicago advocates for circular economies, which they describe as follows:

We envision a paradigm shift in production, consumption and waste driven at the local level, generating equity and economic opportunity for all residents.

What is a Circular Economy?

At the facility scale, a circular economy can be described as conventional waste streams from one process being re-purposed as inputs for another, creating a circular, closed-loop model of material reuse.

At the local scale, it can be described as a collaborative economic practice sustained by local circulation of materials, nutrients, knowledge and money. It’s empowered by transparency, diversity, and inclusion. Read more here.
