Event to be Held Sunday at Blackwell Forest Preserve in west suburban Warrenville

We've posted previously about the OLI Gardens non-profit and its plans for a Patriotic Gardens initiative that will address food insecurity while honoring military veterans. The program is centered on encouraging families and individuals to grow home food gardens and donate part of their harvest to food banks.

This Sunday presents a golden opportunity to learn more about this project while enjoying a cookout in the countryside. The organization is staging a Patriotic Gardens Expo from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Blackwell Forest Preserve's Hawthorn Grove Picnic Area in Warrensville, an outer western suburb of Chicago.

Here's how the organization describes the event:

Join us for a fun-filled, family-friendly event supporting a powerful cause!

As government funding to food banks continues to shrink,  OLI GARDENS is launching the PATRIOTIC GARDENS initiative — encouraging Americans to grow home gardens and donate a portion of the harvest to local food pantries.

Just like President Franklin D. Roosevelt inspired Victory Gardens during WWII, we're asking YOU to be part of a modern-day movement to ensure no one in our communities goes hungry.
