My latest article for Natural Awakenings Chicago Magazine, published in their November issue, focuses on just some of the amazing, world-changing food and farm non-profit organizations in the Chicago region. Natural Awakenings Editor Peggy Malecki and I agreed that the timing was right for this piece, since the end-of-year non-profit fundraising season is upon us.

Says the article, "This article highlights just some of the many city and suburban organizations working to advance a better food system. Readers may wish to learn more about these and other groups and consider including one or more in their end-of-year donations (Giving Tuesday is on December 2)."

As this is a sampler of the broad spectrum of organizations, we chose non-profits representing a range of philanthropic and advocacy topics: Chef Philanthropy; Increasing Access to Healthy Food; Beginning and Early-Stage Farmer Education; School Gardens on Chicago's South and West Sides; Urban Farming and Job Training; Restaurant Skills Education for Young People; Integrating Food Education in School Curriculums; and Urban Farming, Food Access and Training.

Some of you savvy Local Food Forum readers may already be guessing which organizations we highlighted in these categories. Click the button below to see if you're right.

We're also happy to share a seasonal recipe submitted to Natural Awakenings Chicago by Janie Maxwell, executive director of the Illinois Farmers Market Association. Click the button below to get Janie's recipe for a Spinach and Orange Festival Seasonal Salad.
