Experienced Non-Profit Leader to Play Transitional Role
Green City Market — Chicago's flagship farmers market — has chosen non-profit industry veteran Renee Davis as its interim executive director, filling the vacancy created when previous Executive Director Mandy Moody resigned on November 15 for personal reasons.
Green City introduced Renee in its email newsletter on Friday (December 13):
We’re thrilled to announce that Renee Davis has recently joined Green City Market as the organization’s Interim Executive Director!Â
A seasoned nonprofit leader, Renee brings with her 18 years of experience guiding organizations through critical transitions and periods of growth. From working with local Chicago organizations like Lurie Children’s Hospital and the Art Institute to national groups like The Nature Conservancy, Renee has a passion for helping nonprofits thrive through building community and innovative philanthropy.Â
"I am honored to serve as Interim Executive Director at Green City Market, an organization that not only plays a critical role in strengthening Chicago's local food system, but also holds a special place in my heart on a personal level," shares Renee. "As a Chicago native, I spent cherished countless Saturdays at the market — my son even took his first steps at GCM West Loop. As Interim ED, I look forward to partnering with our dedicated staff, board members, and local partners and supporters to build on Green City Market’s mission and work in expanding access to locally grown food and uplifting local farmers."
We’re so excited to welcome Renee to the team and grateful for her leadership as we continue furthering our mission to uplift local farmers and strengthen Chicago’s food system.

I had the pleasure of introducing myself to Renee at Green City's indoor market on Saturday (see photo above).
The indoor market, in its 3rd year at 3031 N. Rockwell in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood, remains a buzzy Saturday morning destination for local food lovers.
My market haul included chicken breasts from Jake's Country Meats (Cassapolis, Michigan); eggs from Finn's Ranch (Buchanan, Michigan); cranberries purchased from Ellis Family Farms (Benton Harbor, Michigan); from Nichols Farm & Orchard (Marengo, Illinois), Yukon Gold potatoes, leeks, sweet potatoes, Empire apples. and beets; and creminis from River Valley Ranch (Burlington, Wisconsin).
The last indoor market of the season is next Saturday (December 21). After a two-week holiday break, it returns on January 11 and will be open every Saturday through March 22, all from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Green City will then kick off the region's outdoor market season on Saturday, April 5.
I also ordered this select produce from Three Sisters Garden in Kankakee, Illinois: a big bag of super-sweet winter spinach and two Autumn Frost winter squash. Farmer Tracey Vowell is one of the few regional farmers that does home delivery in Chicago, and has three more dates this month: December 18, 21 and 28. She will then be taking a very well-deserved break, resuming a normal schedule of deliveries on February 1.
