Hopefully you're planning to hit one (or more) of the many farmers markets already open in the Chicago region. Here's a slice of what's in season right now, from my quick stop on Thursday (May 29) at the Daley Plaza Farmers Market in downtown Chicago's Loop.

From the left, cremini mushrooms from River Valley Ranch (Burlington, Wisconsin); hothouse heirloom tomatoes, lettuce and a couple of bags of baby spinach from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois); asparagus and apples from D&S Farms (Berrien Springs, Michigan); and Wisconsin blue cheese and gruyere from Stamper Cheese (Chicago). And oops, how did that delicious baked doughnut from Daly's Donuts (Chicago) get in there.

What, no strawberries? Where are the strawberries? OK, calm down, I had enough at home and decided to wait until this weekend's markets to restock. They are approaching their peak season — they've been delicious so far — but don't dally... strawberry season can come and go in a blink.

Some other scenes from the around the Plaza.
