The Rain, Rain Will Go Away Soon. In the Meantime, Enjoy a Gosling Parade

Photographing the baby waterfowl at North Pond in Chicago's Lincoln Park is one of my quirky annual hobbies. These birds are always adorable, but never more than when they parade down the pathways of my favorite bird sanctuary, protected by a phalanx of adult geese.

You may notice in the above photo that some of the goslings aren't so tiny anymore. Sigh... the kids grow up so fast. As these photos were taken on May 14 (yeah, last week was too busy to share), there is a good chance that some of the goslings have reached their awkward teenage years: Without the familiar Canada goose coloration, not yet fledged and covered in gray fuzz, but started to approach their adult size.

I hope to get down to the Pond Monday for a Memorial Day walkabout to check out the flocks — maybe duckling season is at least starting in full by now.

If you are in the Chicago area, you have probably been stuck with a gloomy, chilly morning; for us living by the big lake, it's a second straight day of thick fog (through the forecasts give hope of some sun and warmer temperatures this afternoon). In the meantime, I hope these pix brighten your morning a little.

Plus, a bonus bird... a black-crested night heron...
