Check Out the Organization's Busy February Plans

Our friends at the Farmers Rising farm and food education non-profit, based in Caledonia, Illinois, have so many interesting events planned that it's hard to keep up with them.

Let's start with the program that, because of timing, requires the most urgent attention. Farm Beginnings is their intensive program for start-up farmers and those who have a strong interest in getting into farming. Its latest iteration — which runs into May — begins this coming Wednesday (January 29).

Sorry about the late notice, but there may be a few slots left open, so if you're interested, click the button below to schedule a consultation.

Here's how Farmers Rising describes the course:

Farm Beginnings Intensive is a virtual course for people considering starting a farm business, and farmers who have 1-5 years of experience.

What are the benefits of the winter intensive?

  • Develop a clear and comprehensive farm vision by creating an enterprise marketing plan.

  • Join a supportive beginning and aspiring farmer community.

  • Receive advice from more experienced farmers and resource providers.

  • Complete a business plan with operational, financial, and strategic analysis.

What activities will winter intensive participants complete?

  • Complete an e-workbook with exercises designed to help you develop an enterprise marketing plan.

  • Share your perspectives and learn from others' perspectives.

  • Complete an e-workbook with exercises designed to help you make your business plan.

FOR THE PUBLIC

Farmers Rising also has these following events planned for February:

Knead to Know: Intro to Bread Making

Saturday, February 1st from 1-4 PM

This beginner-friendly class will cover flour types and where to find them. Then you'll create a simple and incredibly versatile bread dough. You’ll leave with a freshly baked loaf of rustic bread made from locally sourced ingredients, a recipe, and baking instructions—plus the confidence to recreate it at home!

Common Ground Movie Showing

Friday, February 7th from 7-9:30 PM

By fusing journalistic expose’ with deeply personal stories from those on the front lines of the food movement, Common Ground unveils a dark web of money, power, and politics behind our broken food system.

Valentine's Day Cooking for Two

Saturday, February 15th from 3-6 PM

Make this Valentine’s Day unforgettable with a cooking class at the beautiful Farmers Rising Lodge. Work together to prepare an Italian-inspired four-course dinner. After crafting each course carefully, you’ll cozy up by the fireplace to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
