Learn How You Can Help

Food rescue organizations play vital roles in communities across the nation, collecting surplus food from donor companies and organizations for distribution to sites that provide access for food-insecure individuals and families. They also help the environment by reducing the waste of nutritious and valuable food that would otherwise go to landfills.

Tish Steele, who has served as executive director of Chicago's Green City Market since June, previously headed the Denver Food Rescue organization. And I recently became acquainted with my hometown's own such organization, Chicago Food Rescue.

Chicago Food Rescue is now seeking new food donors. Local Food Forum is pleased to share their message below.

About Chicago Food Rescue

Chicago Food Rescue (CFR) is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to minimize food waste and increase food access by delivering donated food from food businesses directly to food access sites. Our mission is to increase access to nutritious food and reduce environmental impact by rescuing surplus food and delivering it to individuals and communities experiencing food insecurity.

We do this by sending volunteers to pick up donations and give them instructions on where to drop off the food, thereby creating a distribution network for perfectly viable food that would otherwise be thrown away. We firmly believe that no one should go hungry, especially when there is an abundance of food available. By connecting excess food with food insecure neighbors, we strive to create a more equitable and sustainable food system in our city.
